The Man Behind the Match Anand-Gelfand or Who Is Andrei Filatov?

According to Forbes Magazine Andrei Filatov, with partners and fellow billionaires Konstantin Nikolaev and Nikita Mishin, co-owns railway and port operator, N-Trans group. In summer 2011, the partners took Global Ports Investments, one of the biggest port operators in Russia, public, for about $500 million. 
Filatov was born in Ukraine and earned a degree as a chess teacher and coach from the Academy of Physical Culture and Sports in Belarus. 
Filatov worked in expedition companies in Murmansk's port before partnering with Nikolaev and Mishin in 1996 to found Severstaltrans; Alexei Mordashov was also an investor. In 2007 the partners bought Mordashov's stake; in 2008 the group was renamed N-Trans

Last autumn, partners Mishin and Nikolaev sold their 13% stake in railway operator Transoil to Gennady Timchenko, a close friend of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Andrey Filatov kept his 7% stake. 

He financed memorial in Paris to famous chess master and the first Russian world champion, Alexander Alekhine.


He is the major sponsor of the world championship match between Vishy Anand and Boris Gelfand. The rumour also says that he is lifelong friend of Boris Gelfand.
